Size Uncertainty: What It’s Really Costing Your Fashion Store
Giovanna Skonieczny
If you’re dealing with a high number of returns and exchanges, you already have a sense of what size uncertainty is costing you. But looking at your returns doesn’t tell you what never sold in the first place because a shopper wasn’t sure about size, closed the tab, and left.
The truth is, size uncertainty is likely costing you much more than you realize because many of those costs don’t show up in a dashboard.
Size Uncertainty Is Bigger Than Just Your Returns
Size uncertainty doesn’t always lead to a return or a bad review. Sometimes it’s a cart that gets abandoned with no explanation, the shopper still wants the product, they just don’t know which size to order. Sometimes it’s a sale that looks strong on the dashboard but hides a duplicate order placed just to be safe, with one of the two units already destined to come back. And sometimes it’s quieter than that: the customer orders, returns, and simply never comes back, no complaint, no obvious signal beyond a lower repurchase rate.
What these scenarios have in common? The real cost of each one is spread across logistics, support, and marketing, different departments that rarely compare notes on the same root cause. Nobody adds them up in one place, so the true cost of size uncertainty stays invisible even to teams who track returns closely.
To get a sense of scale: according to McKinsey research, 70% of returns in fashion e-commerce are caused by fit or sizing issues. This means size uncertainty isn’t one motive among many for returns, it’s the dominant one.
Not every product category suffers equally. Items with a more sensitive cut or fit carry a disproportionate share of this uncertainty. Therefore it’s worth identifying which categories those are before trying to fix the whole catalog at once.

What Happens When Shoppers Get a Real Answer
A size chart hands the customer a set of numbers and asks them to do the work of measuring themselves, comparing, and guessing. But most people don’t have a tape measure, and even if they did they’re not going to use it while shopping on their lunch break from their phone. Instead, they order their usual size and hope for the best, which is why the chart helps a little but solves almost nothing of the real size uncertainty problem.
That’s where a different approach from the traditional chart comes in. Instead of handing the customer the responsibility of interpreting numbers, it’s possible to flip the logic and deliver the answer they’re looking for directly.
The shift happens when shoppers get a direct, personalized answer instead of a chart to interpret. In our own data, accurate size recommendations with our Virtual Fitting Room showed a consistent impact across the funnel:
- Returns cut by as much as 50%
- Repurchase rates lifted by around 40%
- Average order value up roughly 12%
- Conversion up to 5 times higher on product pages with a real recommendation, compared to pages without one
This matters even more when you consider what’s at stake on the other side: solving size uncertainty upfront, before the purchase, isn’t just a way to sell more, it’s a way to avoid losing for good a customer you already paid to acquire. Our full guide breaks down exactly how large that risk is and how it connects to the behavior behind duplicate orders.

Real-World Proof: The Miik Case
Miik, a Canadian womenswear brand with a lot of stretch and variation in its line, saw conversion 4.73x higher in sessions where shoppers used Sizebay’s Virtual Fitting Room, with AOV up over 20%.
When you give shoppers accurate size recommendations, confidence is actually what you’re giving them at that moment of decision. Give a shopper a clear, trustworthy answer about fit, paired with a way to actually see how it’ll look, and the rest of the funnel should sort itself out.
